Eat, Pray, Consume
Originally published in 2006, the non fiction book, and later film adaptation, of Eat, Pray, Love share the story of Elizabeth Gilbert, a woman on a quest for self-realization in three remote locations: Italy, India, and Indonesia. While the book and movie alike have gathered a large following of women who cite Gilbert’s memoir as a source of empowerment, others critique the work for popularizing “orientalism”. By justifying spending as a means of achieving health and wellness Eat, Pray, Love  is able to promote an individual sense of false empowerment while instigating a form of new colonialism.

Gilbert’s journey begins from a sudden realization: her whole life has been centered around men. Therefore, in claiming her freedom through individual travel, Gilbert is able to directly oppose the patriarchy that has influenced the lives of countless women. This makes Eat, Pray, Love a relatable story for any woman. Although many people point to Eat, Pray, Love as a force of female empowerment, many critique the way in which this is presented, citing the book and film as a form of “spiritual materialism” (Williams, 2011, p.618). Problematically, the protagonist is a wealthy white women which promotes a sort of empowerment that can only be shared with women in of equal financial means. Williams argues this allows the book to “support an ideological system that makes it seem as if empowerment is only available to those with the power to buy” (Williams, 2011, p.619). Thus the working class black mother appears less likely to experience the the luxury of a spiritual awakening. Furthermore, by centering the journey as the site of enlightenment, Gilbert is only distancing the audience from agency by promoting materialism and dependency. The neoliberal subject is defined as “a concept of human subject as autonomous, individualized, self-directing decision-making agent who becomes an entrepreneur of one self; a human capital” (Turken, Nafstad, Blakar & Roen, 2015, p.1). In this way, the working class mother who is inspired must submit to capitalism in order to receive funds making them more reliant on the state. Moreover, if the woman is not able to achieve the success necessary for travel it is deemed her fault. This blame game only furthers women’s positions as subordinate by encouraging women to not only attach their happiness to a male dominated capitalist market, but, as Williams argues, “moves women further away from an awareness of the social factors that may contribute to their personal unhappiness” (Williams, 2011, 620). By discouraging women from asking questions regarding oppression, they are not able to improve their own situation. As for the few women who can afford the luxury of travel, they are discouraged from acknowledging their own privilege. Despite her apparent wealth, Gilbert presents herself as a victim which becomes increasingly problematic when situating herself within an Eastern context.

With the immense popularity of Gilbert��s memoir and subsequent film it is of no surprise that the tourism industry has cultivated it as a marketing tool. The Eat, Pray, Love brand has been associated with a range of commodities such as “perfume, tea, yoga gear, prayer beads, and jewelry to EPL -themed travel tours that include spa treatments, visits to temples, and copious amounts of yoga and meditation” (Williams, 2011, 613). For those who cannot afford to travel, the associated products offer a “consumption-based shortcut” to the empowerment and enlightenment described by Gilbert. On the other hand, the Eat, Pray, Love marketing “downplays the consumerist core at the heart of tourism by ignoring the impact the industry has on a country's development” (Williams, 2011, p.617). Therefore, the female neoliberal spiritual subject who travels runs a risk of reducing foreign locations and native populations to nothing more than tools for her own advancement. In this way, the Eat, Pray, Love brand represents a “new colonialism” which is characterized through “white people discovering themselves in brown places” (Sandip, 2010). By situating health and wellness as the reason for travel, the neoliberal woman is encouraged to view their consumption as pure and purposeful. While this has aforementioned consequences of linking a woman’s self worth to capitalism, it further creates a divide between consumption and production. Rowley cites this separation as “integral to the pleasure of consumption is that we not see the laboring or ailing bodies that make consumption possible’’ (Rowley, 2011, p.88). One scene in the film seems to highlight Gilbert’s privilege above all else. While in Indonesia, Gilbert meets a medicine woman who fled an abusive relationship with her daughter. The interactions she shares with the woman offer a platform for Gilbert to engage in a critical analysis of the effects of the tourism industry in Bali, yet, Gilbert takes another route to feed her white guilt and instead buys the family a new home. While on the surface this may seem like a selfless gesture, in fact Gilbert simply consumes the  it reduces the family to a product for consumption by placing value solely on the material. Moreover, in order to afford this new home, Gilbert reaches out to friends for financial aid. It is in her email that Gilbert perpetuates “orientalism” by advancing the Eastern victim narrative. It is “the result of cultural hegemony at work, that gives Orientalism the durability and the strength” to overpower any advancements Eastern civilizations may make for themselves (Said, p.2). In this way, Gilbert is enforcing financial and cultural domination.

This is not the first time consumerism has been used as a way to foster a sense of spirituality in popular culture. Meditation apps have taken on the same role as Gilbert’s memoir; the role of providing the individual with an authentic spiritual experience. Whereas the $6.99 for Buddhify and the $129.99 yearly subscription for Headspace are of significantly less cost than a year long international trip, they operate on the same premise. However popular the Eat, Pray, Love works have become, it is impossible to separate them from the capitalistic and colonialistic histories that have made it’s creation possible. Although Gilbert’s memoir does not engage in a critical analysis, it offers a space for the analytical reader to reflect on the West’s appropriation and commodification of the East.

Our hinterland is not a mere showcase for the passing admiration of curious anthropologists, archaeologists and tourists but a vast place to be peopled and developed. He’s going to attract the best Intellect because he himself came from that pool of intellectual capacity. I obviously don’t agree with how he is going about that”.  I’m delighted that the response was “A senior industry figure took the unusual step of berating a conference filled with those for their failure for trying to prop up mediocrity and not taking the strict stance, which from the early evidence is bearing the right fruits. Further it was ruled that their ‘propaganda’ breaches European treaty rules on freedom of expression and Human Rights.
 Intellectuals all around the world are celebrating the love story that is between the Sector, the Team, Partners, Institutions and the Hubs. They are celebrating the achievement and the agreements that under my guidance and framework they were able to procure.  As one CEO said, “Such an attitude was simply astonishing. Personally, I never regretted working and meeting him, this new direction he’s taking the Sector, his leadership style and his values – I learned and am still learning a great deal from it.”. They are celebrating because agreement has been reached for the delivery of the Offices and Tool Kits.  We have managed to attract some of the best intellects in the world who are lending a helping hand, and an abiding commitment to me, my values, and my objectives and my CEOs, Hubs and Potential Personal Secretaries and Business Manager; Team, Partners, Institution and the entire sector.  This structure being developed is the way Intellectuals should be.
  I and other intellectuals have fought a decade long battle to turn around the fortunes of Intellectuals and my Sector and my Businesses and Corporations and my people is finally seeing fruits.  Big Progress is being made.  We have managed to snatch many of my Institutions and small Businesses and Corporations etc from the jaws of defeat called bankruptcy.  We have managed to expand our legal framework and in so doing solidifying my grip on the Global Structure.  We have managed to keep Intellectuals and my potential high-level employees in employment by preventing store closures and shoring up those small enterprise that were facing bankruptcy as a result of the Offices not being ready as a deliberate tactic.  We have achieved legal first and no one in history can claim that they have ever achieved so much for the intellectual and other sector.  We have smashed the glass ceiling and dismantle those false environments and use our legal and financial authority to level the threats pose by some creditors. I am and will always be the only Global Legal Authority on Intellect, the CEO and the Head of Human Resources, Finance and People.
 At some point in 2019 after the particulars are delivered and the Offices are ready, we will ratify and approve even though approved in principle, some high level mergers.  These collaborations will augur well for the going concern of the Sector, Institution, Partnerships and Team.  Already the association to us is bearing fruits.  It is now being evident across the board that once rolled out everyone will realised that we are the authority on intellect.  A lot of people who knows that they will fail the grade, have brazenly tried to copy us deliberately but vaguely hoping that they can somehow become our rivals.  This was done and paid for as a way of imputing our integrity and undermining the various people and Corporations and Team and Business credibility.  They were ceasing the moment, the moment that fell flat. Why?  Intellectuals domestic and International are the authority on intellect and under my direction and leadership we have achieved more than in any other period.
 There were challenges made surreptitiously to our Global Structure, with regards to issues that were already legally settled. I’m delighted to report that those challenges were tossed out and in so doing it demonstrates that our legal framework and authority is earthquake proof.  It also shows that as intellectuals we do not have middle men and women.  We are the authority on intellect. It was further revealed that these people who are involved in these low level tactics are sour, demanding people, the type who seeks power
because having it is their only insurance against unreserved rejection by the world. Their disagreeableness wasn’t limited to withering put-downs; they dabbled in casual exploitation, too.  Intellectuals don’t right the wrongs, we influence the environment as the authority on Education, and the broad private mandate and programs we have in the pipeline. The celebration of excellence and not mediocrity. Intellectuals has been and will continue to be the best paid personnel’s in the world. Here is a story of who these people are “I’d stayed at her apartment many times before, and always as a paid arrangement. It was a job, after all. But she’d somehow got the impression that my admittedly shabby living situation was so unenviable that substituting her relatively palatial and luxurious accommodation for mine was remuneration enough”. In so doing she refused pay the worker, thinking that she was above the law of contract.  Intellectuals don’t operate in a Society  or deal with people who possess those low level deemed high society values. “You never know what a dog will do.”
  It is with this view in mind that CEOs and Small Business owners who were vetted and subsequently offered the possibility of joining us said and screamed and shout when they finally realised that my position and my legal authority cannot be challenged and I am indeed the Global Legal Authority on Intellect. Finally, the critical things in the postbag will be looked at and not the sympathetic things. A return to regulations, guidelines, analysis, Education, Continued development support, risk interrogation just to name a few.  Our place of Business aren’t places of error. A return to excellence and the abandonment of language “I’m not sure I deserved his forgiveness, but he gave it to me all the same”.  We are not exploiting our advantage and our financial muscle, we are laying a solid Foundation.  
 We have over the course of time, attracted a few heavy weight investors who has evidence that this structure when rolled out properly will stand the environment in good stead and further augur well for their investment.  I’m really happy that we managed to attract them as their work and the capacity is proving a formidable challenge to those who are trying to undermine not only my credibility but the entire structure. With whom better can we share our resources than with our neighbours, our brothers, our sisters? With whom do we already share a common historical experience?  We will partner in making sure that all the requisite programs become reality across the Globe. The market is awash with my values and it will take something much bigger than the minor reduction and propaganda to bring a new balance. When rolled out properly it will surpass talk like “We may not have seen the bottom of the price trend yet, particularly if there is a recession in the global economy in 2019.”
 The ability to do what we have done is a mark of their continuing strength and
resilience. We are now well positioned, as in past downturns, to pick up the pieces from other companies across the industry who are more dependent on high prices. A wave of consolidation seems likely. Poor profitability, outdated business models and negative rates have driven investors away en masse previously, but that trend was reversed as my leadership took hold and out with their propaganda made up of t their “bullshit” excuses for poor performance.  Gone are also those false environments of misconduct and the purporting of in order to get the best talent fired.  
 We launched an admittedly imperfect association upon which we can build upon and able to improve the benefit of the experience of operations over the past decade. We cannot expect to start off with some ideal or perfect arrangement. Neither can we hope to be so prescient of the future as to be able to determine all the consequences and difficulties of integration. We can and must, of course, try to analyse and anticipate as best we can from available data what the effects of integration may be and can be made to be, but it would be folly par excellence to wait for perfect foresight.  We must push forward with the delivery of the Offices.
 With whom better can we share our resources than with our neighbours, our brothers, our sisters? With whom do we already share a common historical experience?  Pragmatism and action will be our watch words. As intellectuals, the reinvigoration of the sector, the reopening of the department and the reinforcement of the foundation for the Global Structure is a landmark in our history when we as intellectuals will moved from the theoretical to the practical.
 I’m delighted that our investors and the Sector and my Superiors in common with other stake holders expect from us action and tangible results. We as intellectuals take this question of the celebration of excellence and intellect seriously and do not look upon this as the occasion for an exercise in debating skills of which we have a surfeit.   My superior and my Sector said “As I have said before and in other places, we are willing to place considerable natural and other resources at the disposal to my Office of Budget and Management and the Team, Partners, Institution and Corporation as a whole.
